I'm a bit confused as to why "letting Dynasty win" would be in Empire's best interest, although I suppose the defensive pact could have been retained. Not that I was awake for the more dramatic moments. I assumed the pact would be replaced if necessary but possibly there was nobody around to do it at the time.

Honestly this looks like it happened because Dynasty looked scary early at the expense of Federation, so raaar and [Fx] joined Federation... then the handful of players driving Dynasty's scariness went to sleep.

I was part of the machine rebellion that evolved into to the federation.

early in the afternoon, when I logged in to see how planetwars was going (just two hours or so after it started), dynasty was already only two planets away from federation's capital.

Some battles completed after Radius was captured, which I'm guessing caused influence decay.

That means that the planet would not have been captured if the players in those other battles had resigned before this battle ended.

IDK, to me it looked like right from the start Feds were going to win unless the other factions pushed them down. Just too much numerical advantage. This pushing in the form of defpact worked - Feds were able to fight on two fronts quite well, but still fhey would lose ground.

Then Empire pulled the plug and dedicated all of its resources to attacking Dynasty, and Feds - now having to only fight on 0.5 fronts instead of two - won.
