so the idea here is to basicly have players set up their comm loadouts on the site up to thirty levels, then every 5 minutes in a match the comms will morph automaticly, for free.

currently morphing commanders is more or less considered a waste of metal outside of a few meme builds in the big 16v16 matches, and a few rush builds usualy involving cloaked jump commanders. typicaly the metal used for morphing them could be better spent on other, more effective units. so the general idea here is to see if we can make the comm morphing a steady paced upgrade over time that keeps commanders relevant as more then just a resource generator especialy lategame, and also isnt a massive resource sink that could go into better armed and armored units.

Trying to make commanders relevant in the lategame, whether it is by giving them free upgrades or any other mechanism, poses a fundamental problem: because your commander is irreplaceable, it encourages players to be timid when expanding with their commander in the early game, and results in even harsher punishment when you lose your commander to some cheese like Widows, Ravens, etc.

Expanding with your commander will still probably be the correct gamble to make, but the punishment for losing that gamble being "you lose access to free cool upgrades forever" is a feels-bad moment. Losing the free income already feels pretty bad.

Being able to configure future morphs and auto-queueing those morphs is a good idea though, even in the current system where these morphs cost resources. You can set up 3-4 levels then let the com upgrade them instead of having to micro back to your com upgrades every min.

It's an interesting idea. It feels a little arbitrary to me at the moment, as the morph timings would essentially be guessing at the pace of the game. A high escalation game may see the comm lag behind while a lean game could see the comm dominate. So perhaps it should be tied to something, or there should be a way to speed it up beyond its base rate.

I agree with AUrankAdminAquanim in that commanders will tend to dominate the game if they are given too much free power. We might have to look into ways of rebuilding them, but that sort of feels arbitrary too.

The greatest limitation on the idea as it stands may be the requirement of people editing their comms online. I don't think everyone is aware that this exits, and it doesn't affect singleplayer.

Well, generally, upgrades could make commanders much stronger. The problem is that commander is a unit that is active since the beginning of the game and it can do stuff while it is being morphed. It should not affect early game more than it affects it now. The solution might be to make the upgrade from (for example) lvl 5 to lvl 6 take more time, make it more expensive and the commander should not be able to fight or move while being upgraded, but once it reaches this level, it should be able to engage in a fight with demi striders and have a shot at defeating them. Or just make it some separate upgrade.

why not make this a mod and see what people think?

People can make whatever mods they like, if they are willing to put in the time to make it happen.
