Is Zero-K just clusterfucks now?

Hello everyone,

Long time player here. I started playing Zero-K like 8 years ago and I enjoyed the game a lot. Small team battles up to 4 v 4 were my favorite, because it was casual enough that you didn't have to always do your best, but if you played well, you could still make a huge impact on the result of the match. At some point I stopped playing Zero-k due to reasons I don't even remember myself.

So anyway, I was trying to return to Zero-K, but every time I try to look for a match, it's always just one 32 player clusterfuck room. Of course, there were clusterfuck matches back in my day too, but those weren't the main attraction, so to speak. Finding a normal 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 match was never an issue. Do people not play small team matches anymore? Did the game change direction while I was gone?

People do play small team games but that is often while waiting for the big lobpot to open up.There is also a lot of FFA going on. Sometimes you can have 3v3v3 which is fun. But I think you are right, there's a lot more big games going on right now

There are players who also prefer small teams out there, they often also just see the "big game" running so join that. Try hosting or joining some small teams games and I'm sure some players will join up at busy times.

I admit to sometimes waiting much too long for a slot in the lobsterpot. I've had some good smaller games, but I just don't really have the speed or knowledge to run a map-sized battle very well. Its nice to be part of the battle.

Would be nice with some mechanism to fork the lobsterpot at certain points.

I tend to enjoy larger games, but yeah, it can be messy.

I wonder if having some bigger maps offered when there are more players may help with this.

a vote to fork the lobster pot was mandatory at some stages, most players hate it, and almost never used, and when they are used, the smaller room almost always die

Oh didn't know there was a fork-vote before. Interesting.

How about this: a different kind of vote, the question being "split off a 4v4" or similar, in which there would need to be (in the 4v4 case) 8 votes to pass. Those that vote positive automatically get moved to a new lobby once/if the vote passes. This makes the process of forking voluntary and all-or-nothing, meaning people would not suffer a cost due to a failed attempt to fork.

I believe that also existed at one point in time (it moved people to teams MM or an MM-like room) and also wasn't popular.

It still exists, but only fires above a threshold which is probably set above 32 currently (`!invitemm X`). Also it didn't just move people into a room, it threw them straight into the next game (don't get to pick the map etc, same as with matchmaking) and the vote happened immediately after the ending of the previous game. Maybe improving those aspects would show some promise but I wouldn't be hopeful (also it needs the scarce infra mana).

Haven't tried it yet, but saying
!proposebattle minsize=8 maxsize=8
in chat should do exactly that (except it's not a vote, but a clickable link).
