In your opinion what is the best raider and why?

I'm asking so I can have references on my 20 page College thesis on why my relationship with the glaive is getting in the way of my marriage.

glaive is the best i feel, cheap fast, great damage, carries cloaky on its own, and could carry through the entire game with the help of cloaked imp/smart imp placement

Duck is a very solid one that can work with point move unlike glaive. But it has less speed and weapon is different such that I don't really want to clean up land the sameway as a glaive might, imo.

"Best" raider depends on how much prep time, what type of game and how long has the match been going. I'm assuming early game, 1v1. In late game kodachi is pretty much only viable true raider.
If it's early game, then three scorchers can instill the fear of god in any newbie, the instant I know I'm playing against rovers I never leave a mex without two lotuses and a fencer.
Glaives are still good, they're cheap but any mobile riot unit can easily deal with 4 glaives in early game. Good luck dealing with the fire tick damage scorchers give.

Doesn't scorcher burn, like kodachi and pyro? pretty sure it does.

You'll melt, but its not technically fire.

Also gloriously melt-inducing, but with less noise.

For very early game with little to no AA, locust is awesome.

Kodachi is the one I have the most fun using and therefore in my eyes it's the best.

Depends on the game size. for 1v1s it depends on the map, redback on hilly maps, flat maps is a bit more iffy between glaive and koda, and the best naval raider is by far duck
for team games nothing beats the early game mex killing and map control capabilities of trinity

Imagine raiding with a nuke, what a power move

As someone who played kodachis and scorchers for a long time, I noticed a few important things.
If a player wants to pressure the opponent, scorchers are the cheapest option. A single scorcher forces a lotus turret on every border and every point in map, and likely twice as much if they don't want the defensive line breached. However, simultaneously, the rover factory should never rely on scorchers as their main force, as scorchers cannot take engagements.
If a player wants a big heavy raider, kodachis are the best. Their problem is that they cannot go alone, as they are far too easy to pick off.
If a player wants to focus on units other than raiders, but still cause considerable damage and terror, then glaives are the best raider. Nothing scares an enemy player as much as noticing the unnoticed glaive army that they likely cannot stop, be it in a team game or in a 1v1.

As a bonus, the best raider for dealing with other raiders seems to be venom, but that's more complicated.

Almost always, a player does not want to rely on solely raiders, since raiders are very easy to block off with some decent defences. They are good to catch the opponent off-guard, bad to not have, but almost always, it's best to not engage with them if both sides play well. That is actually something I enjoy about Zero-K, but that is my personal opinion.

Glaive would be the best if they wouldn`t have really bad matchups against most (all?) other raiders.

Glaives.

I guess I could write another tier list. Assume a team game on a land map, and this is a "how good do I think this unit is" rating rather than "how well does this match the raider ideal".

I feel less confident about most ratings on this list than I did for the assault list. I think claiming Scorcher, Glaive, Kodachi or mayyyybe Bandit/Pyro as the "best raider" in teams are all defensible positions - I would not call any of them S tier teams units though. Obviously 1v1 meta will be different.

A tier:
Scorcher
When you need sheer DPS, accept no substitutes. Veh movement makes it a little clumsier than the bot raiders, though.

B tier:
Glaive and Bandit
B-plus, some days feels A-tier. Glaive is a bit less explosive than Scorcher but more nimble. Bandit less explosive again, but it can cosplay as an antiraider if it needs to.

Kodachi and Pyro
A tier early, but impact falls off a cliff after that, especially Kodachi. I suck with both of these.

C tier:
Dagger
This unit absolutely can be good. Very strong in some raider matchups, and trashes air. But in my experience there are an awful lot of jobs I want my raiders to do that Dagger does not have the DPS to get done.

Duck
I've been underwhelmed with Duck lately. On land, anyway. Obviously still good as a water unit.

D tier:
Blitz
Not worthless by any means, but I am typically not happy to be building it. This is metal that could be going into a Minotaur or Cyclops.

Locust
There are probably maps where this is good in small teams. Most games this doesn't seem very good though.

Scout ratings:
Flea: S-tier. Has no competition at what it does well.
Dart: B to B-plus. Big fan of this unit. Good scout, good at slowing things for Scorcher to kill, good for snaring striders and as chaff late.
Dirtbag: B-minus. Mostly useful for inflicting Emotional Damage. Against a good player who is not tilting, Dirtbag is occasionally good but most often not.

Antiraider ratings:
Bolas: A-tier. Strongest and most versatile unit in this category. Like Dart the slow can be a nasty surprise for anything up to strider weight.
Venom: B to B-plus. Not as versatile as Bolas in terms of what it can fight, but being all-terrain is nice.
Archer: B-tier. This is fine. Not really exciting. It gets the job done.
Redback: Really more of a riot, but somebody mentioned it above so... B-plus to A-minus.

I don't know how to rate Scythe. I suck with it and nobody has wowed me with it recently, but I don't think it has been nerfed much since the last time it felt good. Somewhere in the B to A range I guess.

Aquanim's rating seems to be the most well-reasoned.

On the topic of scythes, I think I can add a little.

I tried scythes in Team games. They are very good at, hahah, infiltrating positions. They can annihilate far away wind farms with ease, and they can easily take out fusion reactors in small numbers, slowing down the opponent.

If the scythes can't pass through, scorpions can easily break through defenses, both serving as a distraction and a "breach" tool for scythes to go for juicier targets, like fusion reactors and anti-nukes.

They also serve as great escort for cloaked artillery like Phantoms.

As for an all-around unit, they're bad.
I would never amass an army of scythes, as it is always easier to attach an iris to raider to make it serve a more passive job. Scythes work as a strike unit, and they're good at that. Outside of their initial surprise trick, not that I've seen.

Overall, they work less like a raider unit and more like an infiltrator unit.
