I am making some new models for multiple units. The one I am currently working on is the Faraday, I will be finishing the Reef at some point though. I plan to replace all of the current .3do models with some shiny new .s3o ones. I will update this with the latest WiP shots of my current model, whatever that happens to be at the time. Any and all feedback is welcome.

Progress on the Faraday model.

Download and test the .blend file.

I have done a mockup of the packing and unpacking animations. Just open the above file in blender and select which one you want then press ALT+A to run it. Each animation is on a different scene.

This Faraday is based on the LLT because it will use the current LLT texture unless a good new one becomes available.

EDIT: [*img][/img] tags seem to be broken.

IMO, faraday should be like this.

Are you forgetting that the faraday has an armoured state? It retracts inside of an armoured shell.

I was looking at Tesla coils for inspiration but they were not good for the armored state and I could not make one angular enough for the industrial texture atlas without making it look stupid. If someone would make a CEG/LUPS like that to go around the barrel it would look amazing though.

From what it looks, this faraday candidate could do for packing pretty much what current 3do one does:

1) align barrel vertically.
2) contract all extended bits downwards as allowed by geometry.

So in packed state, you'd see the turret base, and that thing above it, barrel and most of shaft having collapsed inwards.

It doesn't look like it is able to be armoured. Look closely at the top of the current Faraday and how it folds into the hexagonal area. I think it is a nice touch.

The one I downloaded seems to be fine. But I don't give a vote before I see it with texture and next to the LLT model.

But why 2 close steps?
With one step (the first ends when the second is 2/3 finished) it could be much faster (if desired).

Download and test the .blend file.

I have updated this with an unpacking animation as well as the packing one. Just open the above file in blender and select which one you want then press ALT+A to run it. Each animation is on a different scene.

It is a two step animation because I thought that the packing animation should take a bit longer. With it's current animation the Faraday is easy to bait artillery with.

Current Gauss is 4-step and 500ms (just as long as former gauss). It also generally unpacks faster because it can start aiming before gun is unpacked.

Bottom line: amount of keyframes has only weak correlation to animation time.

I did like old Gauss model.

AFAIK, You could just modify the unpack speed/time with a lua variable...

Progress is made. Well, sort of. It is actually negative progress because I could not think of a way to avoid obvious clipping while not making it look stupid and not having all the faces on the top of the base go crazy (as you can see in the previously posted .blend file). So I decided that in the interests of trying to have it ready for the next stable I would just dig a hole in the base. This will ease UV mapping and it should not be too noticeable when playing. This version has no animations.

Download the new model.

Only note i got to the model is that it have no proper join for turret tilt.

Also i think that in this case would mirror modifier payed of, it makes modelling and unwrap easier.

Well, all ambitious plans will inevitably fail with a one man team and not enough skills. It was going fine, then I got to texturing... I don't think that I will be able to finish these to any kind of quality if I have to texture them. So if anyone wants to do the texturing (which I doubt) that would be great, otherwise I don't think these will be finished.

EDIT: To clarify, I have no problem making models. It is just the texturing that is the problem.

But not with a one-man-army.

Maybe, but I am not a one man army.

i can texture it
just give me a direction. Like a mockup/draw/pictures of what you want

Great! Thanks a lot BRrankmuffa! I am not really sure what direction to go in with textures though. I was thinking some gritty rusty scifi industrial thing with lights and grilles and stuff but not a lot beyond that. AUrankAdminSaktoth specified that it must use the industrial texture atlas (used on the LLT) so I guess that dictates what can be done. Could you do the design beyond that or should I try to do some kind of procedural texture mockup?

I have re-uploaded the file so some links may be broken. If you find one please mention it. The new file is here.

You can use whatever texture you want but texturing is not exactly easy, the atlas makes things much easier and will ensure that you can get a consistent style across any models you make.

Where can i get some atlas which suits ZK?

Gritty industrial panel atlas is awesome but too dark.
