New random map.
  • Faster texture generation (thanks PLrankRafalpluk).
  • Corner vs. corner.
  • Smaller.
  • Igloos.
  • Revamped mex system.
  • A lot of tweaking the generation. There is generally more stuff going on.

Random seeds are printed to the infolog. Search for "Random Seed". They can be entered in the lobby under Options -> Map. Here are the three above.
  • 9099572
  • 5024065
  • 7468282

Supported for testing.

It's not bad, but I think I much prefer Random Crags.

This has too many features, at too small a scale to really grok. Random Crags, otoh has a small number of well defined, clear and impactful features.

Bot or vehicle or hover or even spider factory are all viable starts on random crags depending on the specific situation, goal and map randomness. With random plateaus it's basically always going to be bots.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that this is bad, it's just that a random Random Crags will generally be better than half the featured maps!

I think Plateaus tech can be made to reliably output superior versions of Crags just with config alterations (fewer seed points per volume) or minimal code (enforce rover access at graph tier).

I do think that Plateaus falls just a bit too high on the obstacle/area ratio. Certainly the terrain feature density on the above 3 maps seems a lot higher than every current MM 1v1 map, and seems comparable with, if not higher than, the amount of discomfort you have on maps like RandomMap12x. But that's also a configurable thing.

Bring out the forks :P

GBrankdyth68, I see your point, although I have never played this map or Random Crags, this map can be good for diversity, as having a map just like Random Crags would be completely pointless. Some people might like a just-bots map, but if they don't then they can go and play Random Crags.
When your talking about maps, a variety is a good thing, but I suppose a variety is good in a lot of things.

It might be wise to play the map before passing some of the specific judgments made here.

That is very true, I'll check it out some time.

I wonder when random maps will enter the matchmaker.

I quite liked one of the maps that I played here yesterday, the other one was really difficult to play because of terrain, but difficult does not equate to bad. The metal layout and textures are both certainly improved here over crags.

As I watched GF develop and provide screenshots of maps as it was being made, some of the maps were pure gold. Despite him providing the seeds, I know I'll never go back to play them (still too unwell!). It's also because I know this thing will spit out even more such maps - particularly as it gets improved upon.

Really looking forward to when random is every bit as good as something like AoE2 and we can feature it in MM.
