This has become MTR so I'm making a mod request to retain ideas between occurrences.

The aim of this mod is to let people build custom factories then play an otherwise normal game of ZK. It is aimed at 1v1 since a large range of units are available from the start in teamgames anyway. There are a few choices to make:
  • How do people select their factory? Players could draft their factory from a pool of units, or somehow create and save factories that they can select at the start of the game.
  • Are players allowed to make other factories?
  • Are air units includable?
  • Does the factory have its own model?

Very nice idea.
My opinion:

- create and save factories would be easier for players but require more dev-mana I suppose.

- you should be allowed to make other factories.

- No air-units

- Own model would be nice, but not mandatory.

What would be cool is factory with custom units, like you choose chasis bot-track-hover-air and add some stuff like creation of commander, so the factory has like bot chasis size 3, and 7 shotguns or something... other is speedy wheel scout armored to tee, but a fire bomb... idk... something like that. chances are kinda slim to make it happen like that since i seen some spring unit build tutorials on stuff im making my own how rigid and 90s it is... but still..

In other words modular factory where you pick the desired units from the other factories?

I will develop this mod. Here are my plans at the moment:

Factories will be created by giving the player a pool of units available at the start (like the com selection screen, but bigger) to choose from. Players will be able to choose from 2 raiders, 1 con, 1 skirmishers, 1 riot, 1 Assault, 1 aa, 1 demi strider, and then 3 other units to choose from. Airplane units probably wont be allowed, but gunships will be. After the player has selected their units, the factory will be available to be built as if it was any other factory

I plan to have factories be exportable and importable strings that will allow for quick and easy sharing and starting.

Players will be allowed to make other factories, but the cost will probably be increased

The factory will probably use the cloakbot factory model.

Im new to modding, so everything about this plan is subject to change. If I do get this mod working, I will probably try and do a lot of multiplayer testing to see what should and shouldn't be allowed.

Sounds cool but idk how popular it would be, seems like a fun idea but easily bored of due to bad balance on factories and selections
would deffo give it a go though

I feel like constraining the role makes the classification a significant part of the rules (is Venom a riot or a raider?), and also probably helps the mode converge quicker to an optimal meta (which is bad imo).

I would recommend just giving 5 to 8 unit slots for all roster, without any role locks.

I do agree. While there are good reasons to have most roles filled, if someone thinks they can do without a raider/riot/arty, why not let them try? Some factories lack a class anyway, spiders and amphs arty, tanks skirmishers and jumpbots are a mess anyway...
Unless of course you can see a particular op combination that is possible with 2 skirmishers or similar. Tanks with any skirmisher that is strong vs skirmishers sound strong

I personally think a "point value" system would work well when selecting units, that way its not a set value of each type of unit or anything.

Lurking to see where this goes.

Yeah, ill probably just test with no role locks or anything at first. I do like the idea of a point system, but unless I base it off the unit's cost, it would force me to evaluate every single unit, which I'm not sure I'm able to do.

Its probably just worth to test with no restriction other than 8 units, and then balance from there.

How about the only factories you can build at any point are those designs that someone chose at startup?

Dear fellow lobsters.

This BYO factory gave me idea.

We as humanity have like webgl tech, with shitton of libs in the wild that give ready made object placement.

What if we would do unit generator, that works like commander maker, you make unit from ready made components, like chasis fragmets, servos, guns. Each component add to unit cost appropriately. Each component can be scaled with cube cost increase/decrease, but also increase of its potential to carry heavier guns and so on.

Unit generator lives in the webs, it writes units to its base, then calls in a unit compiler to compile all units. Each player with own unit makes own faction that expands on top of usual ZK.

Not sure if zk/spring allows this, but besides game mod, it would also have faction submods loaded up, or one custom submod with units.
I heard of mapmods, not sure if theres something in between like game mod, mapmod, and stand alone mod that needs to be distributed and loaded up.

Deatiles of this coked up idea are here:

Whatcha think?

The tech is out there in the wild. People do those sort of things. The hard pard owuld be filling it with content of elements tho this can be scripted with script running through existing units and chopping units to components. And unit compiler would be needed to be written. Prolly spring expanded to wget unit lib on game load. No biggie.

2-3 minutes in front before words salad kicks in give insigth on what webgl does

Have you played TerraTech? Not the best game, but very cool to build mostly whatever you want from blocks, then do battle. I could imagine an economy where you build and assemble parts into anything, and the community would discover what works.

Someone should make that game.
