stardust used to be so op.. it was fun making terraform wall with stardust behind so if anything went past wall it died =D

here is dps divided by cost:
this does not account for aoe
stardust: 2.04 (has aoe)
lotus: 0.83
stinger 0.42
picket 0.25
gauze 0.23 ((has aoe))
desolator 0.88 (has aoe)
luci 0.18
and you get 2 lotus for one stardust in cost
if dps is your goal stardusts are a great option
but i agree they are squishy and expencive.. since range is the most op stat in the game.. stardust like lotus are probably best used sparingly to prevent enemy raids at key locations and choke points
some maths:

the heat means if i understand correctly that every second 35% slowness (max 50% slow) is gained and 16.7% slowness is lost
a net gain of 18.3%/second.. so after 2.73 seconds it will have almost the same dps of lotus
over those 2.73 seconds of dps it will do roughly 768.4 damage doing my best to account for the deminishing damage
thats 10.24 seconds of lotus dps.. if we plug that number back into the puzzle by dividing it by the 2.73 seconds the stardust is supirior to lotus we get 3.75 lotus worth of burst damage.. i know this has probably has heaps of mistakes but whatever..
TLDR:

1 stardust has better dps output then 1 lotus for 2.73 seconds
1 stardust same dps done as 3.75 lotus for 2.73 seconds
so aslong as your fight is vs grouped enemies and they die in less then 2.73 seconds it was better by almost double
after 2.73 seconds the stardust cant compete with the two lotus that can be made for the cost of the stardust.. even though the stardust still has better cost vs dps @ its 50% slow state.. the equivelent metal spent allows for 2 lotus vs 1 stardust.. so the 2 lotus overtake stardust dps in roughly an extra 5.12 seconds
