Can you reclaim the puppies? Like absorb the wreck with them and bring them back someplace safe and reclaim them that way? (I know you'd get way less metal this way, but is it possible at all?)

Yes its possible 1000% but everyone may think that you are mad or total troll. And it will be hard to reclaim them individually.
Puppy wreck eating tactics works in two way - you deny reclaim for enemy or you need emergency puppy.

Live units are reclaimed for 50%, so there is quite a loss. I think you can reclaim live units with area reclaim centred on a unit of the type you want to reclaim, it looks like you need to hold Ctrl to make it happen.
