This project aims to improve the general quality of the maps played for ZK and adjusting other spring maps so that they will fit Zero-K gameplay. However these are meant to enchance aesthetics of the maps and include bugfixes while possibly retaining the gameplay values intended for that map.

The priority will be given to first to intended for the initial Steam map pool. Then to these wich are most pupular within the players and then these put on the reserve that used to be pupular or seem to have interesting desgin.
But regardless a low hanging fruit overrides all these priority rules above so if the map is liked and has good design while only lacking a couple of things then it will be properly polished.

The scope of the project varies as listed:
Small adjustions - minor changes wich are limited, but not restricted to: changing a metal map, replacing and repositioning map features, removing/fixing the widgets, adding the specular map and more.
Minor remake - change of multiple minor parameters or major features wich include: height map, texture map, slightly changing the design of the map.
Major remake - remaking the map from the scratch.

You mostly forgot one important thing: SSMF. Not all maps have it, all maps should have it, not just Tombstone Desert. At the very least some detail textures to make the zoomed-in map look detailed. Most maps occupy also use a specular map, and some could use a normal map as well. There's the occasional map that could use a reflection map, but that's a pretty rare case comparatively.

Also, my list is on the wiki already. Most of it is just SSMF work, though Red Comet and Comet Catcher might need more (or we start with Comet Catcher v2 and remove the fake craters from the metal spots.

The whole list is still WIP. I just wanted you to respond to whole thing or catch you in #ZK before i marked other maps for minor adjustments (note that there is only Tombstone there right now) because I honestly dont know much abaut SSMF so I didnt want to blindly guess wich ones need it or not.
I thought that your list was abaut already polished maps thus it was why you chose them.
CArankAdminShadowfury333 you are free to suggest wich ones need SSMF. That would be really appriciated.

Open the map file (sd7). If you see mapinfo.lua and a set of images (usually png, generally labelled for what they do) it has SSMF. If not, then it doesn't.

Neither version of CCR has SSMF, but the new one has an overall better texture, apart from the fake craters. It's probably a better starting point.

This looks like a good idea. Here are some more suggestions:
  • Sun: Many maps have their sun set incorrectly. It causes hard shadows or dark units.
  • Lava: Old lava maps would be improved with the lava shader.

Orfelius: Anarchid mentioned you had issues with decompilation. Here's the process:

1. Unpack the .sd7 of the map to a folder
2. In SpringMapEdit, Go to Map->Import Spring SM2 Map
3. Select the .smf file of the map, inside the newly unpacked folder

It will load the map, and then you can edit in SME or save off the various SMF components (Texture, Metal, Vegetation, Height, Type) as images. If you save off Height, make sure it is 16-bit PNG.

What standard are these being remade to? I think if maps like DSD-D V3 were the visual standard ZK would look pretty good.

Onyx Cauldron, Ravaged, Obsidian, and Sapphire Shores are all very nice looking maps. DSD-D v3 looks pretty good, but I don't think it uses SSMF (which should generally be in every map, even if just for detail textures, though most maps could make use of specular highlights and normal maps).

Dsd-3 has splats and speculars at the very least, i think. Very few maps use normals.

Yeah, normals are a bit tricky to know when to use them. Intersection could definitely use them in the metallic bits for grooves, and possibly also to make the roads and sidewalks slightly more distinct from each other.

DeltaSiegeDry_Deluxe_V3 doesnt have splats, speculars, but it does have detailtexture map giving this sandy look. It uses smd. Its decent quality though.

SapphireShores_V2.1 has splat and speculars, uses smd instead of mapinfo.lua. Not a good candidate. Nice map.

Obsidian_0.1_Beta has splat and speculars, the newest version also have grass and trees but it uses smd(why is @theMooseLoose using smd on every single map of his?) and doesnt have SSMF. Its supposedly still WIP though. Quite eye pleaseing (at least the newest version).

You mentioned Conquest_of_Paradise_v1 in our conversation CArankAdminShadowfury333. Well it does have speculars and nothing else. It also uses smd. It is ok map.

OnyxCauldron1.6 has speculars, splat, nicely done water but uses smd and has no grass nor features. However it is a beutiful map asthetics wise but technically wise it doesnt meet all the expectacions but seems decent enough to not need any corrections.

And we get to final mentioned map wich is Ravagedv2. This map is very nicely done and really eye pleasing (more than its orginal version even imo). It has almost everything: detailtexture, speculars, grass, splat, nicely done water, features you name it. The only 2 things that it lacks is normal map (but it wouldnt really benefit from normal map) and mapinfo.lua.
I say that is a model we should be striving for with every map we re/make.

I am also considering to narrow the scope of the project rather majorly due to fact that it looks like almost every single featured map should be upgraded in one way or another. Maby with some exceptions such as Onyx Claudron and Ravaged.
I would narrow it only to maps with very good design such as Red Comet, Comet Catcher, Cooper Hill, Tartarus etc. I would like to hear opinions upon that fact and also proposals wich maps exacly has best designs in your opinion.

Edit: Also isn't it ironic that a Stacraft map is a standart map for our project?

This is a contradiction. SSMF more or less constitutes use of any of the following maps - splat, specular, normal, emission, or grass.

It is not. Starcraft may have downsides, but lack of aesthetic perfection is not amongst them.
